Analysts guessing over central bank’s next move

Debates on whether the central bank needs to further ease monetary policy or not are continuing amo

ng analysts, with their emphasis on guessing the next liquidity injection through reducing banks’ reserved deposits.

Supporters of monetary easing expect that another cut in the re

serve requirement ratio (RRR) may come no later than this week, as a liquidity shorta

ge may occur after commercial banks pay back 366.5 billion yuan ($54.65 billion) to the central bank on Wedn

esday. That amount of interbank lending was conducted previously under the medium-term lending facilities (MLF) scheme.

Opponents, however, contend that the current liquidity is sufficient, and any further ea

sing will fuel inflation risks, especially as Chinese economy has started its upcycle.

The central bank’s monetary policy committee held the first quarter’s regular meeting on Friday.

The members achieved a consensus to continue the counter-cyclical measures and stren

gthen coordination between monetary and fiscal policies. Policy fine-tuning should be at the proper time, to prev

ent risks with the priority of stabilizing growth, according to a statement after the meeting.

Four public holidays in 2018, namely the Spring Fest

ival, Tomb-sweeping Day, May Day and Dragon Boat Festival, all saw a marked increase in the number of domestic tourists.

During the three-day Tomb-sweeping Day holiday that ende

d on April 7, the number of domestic tourists reached 112 million, a 10.9 increase year-on-year.

Apart from sightseeing, more Chinese tourists now opt to exp

erience the cultural essence of their destinations by visiting local museums.

Over the past three years, visitors to Chinese museums have been growing by about 100 mi

llion each year, Liu Yuzhu, head of the National Cultural Heritage Administration, told reporters earlier this year.

During the week-long Spring Festival Holiday in 2019, more than 40 percent of the 415 milli

It’s more than just dance: both consider the ball a

window to Viennese social traditions, classical music, and Austrian culture.

While recommending three must-see Austrian cities for first-time visitors, ambass

ador Stift gave a surprising answer. While well-known cities like capital Vienna with its iconic concert hall, Mus

ikverein, and Salzburg , once home to Mozart, both make the cut, that doesn’t tell the full story.

Brice Péan, who studied at ski resort Innsbruck, showed his know

ledge of China, mentioning Hallstatt, a small Austrian town modeled on a Chi

nese housing development, as an increasingly popular destination for Chinese tourists.

Consider this video a warm-up for tonight’s ball. If you can’t ma

ke it, stay with China Daily’s app and you’ll have a chance to win a guest gift bag.

We’re sending 10 of these gift bags to readers in our next episode. Stay tuned.

Beijing News also reported that the facility caught fir

before the explosion. The facility is adjacent to a

natural gas station, the explosion of which caused the tragedy, the report said.

An assessment report on the factory’s environmental protection

facilities drafted in July 2018 by the Jiangsu Provin

cial Academy of Environmental Science showed that Tianjiayi has a warehouse wit

h a floor area of more than 1,000 square meters to store industrial waste, which includes tar and methyl alcohol.

The assessment report said the plant generated on average about 11 metric tons of solid waste and w

astewater per day, and there has been an accumulation of 4,500 tons of hazardous waste in the factory every

year. While some of the waste materials are transported out for disposal, others are processed within the factory.

A special license is required to dispose of hazardous waste in China. Accor

ding to the Jiangsu’s Department of Ecology and Environment, 460 enterprises in the prov

ince had the necessary licenses as of the end of 2018, but Tianjiayi was not among them.

Official records also show that Tianjiayi had been punished at least twice for violations in waste management.

Four-day May Day holiday offers best of both the worlds

Editor’s Note: The May Day holiday this year would be extended to four days. When Premier Li Keqiang was asked at a news con

ference during the recent second session of the 13th National People’s Congress whether China would res

ume the May Day golden week holiday, he said relevant departments were studying the issue and would serio

usly consider the public’s opinions before making a decision. What effects will a four-day holiday have on the people and

the economy? Two experts share their views on the issue with China Daily’s Liu Jianna. Excerpts follow:

Holiday answers people‘s appeals

The four-day holiday will, to a large extent, meet Chinese people’s require

ments for a better life, including the growing desire to enjoy quality longer vacations both at home and abroad.

There have been calls for longer holidays ever since the May Day golden

week holiday was reduced to three days. And the extension of the May Day holiday to four

days this year suggests the government has been taking public opinions into serious consideration.

young man in Central China designed, constructed and

decorated a unique cement pipe room in 45 days, and made short videos to record the whole process and put them online, attracting many followers.

The man surnamed Long, 28, used to serve in the army and now runs a home “agritainmen

t” inn in Shaoshan, Central China’s Hunan province, the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald reported Wednesday.

Long said he has been a fan of Japanese animation and manga since childhood — especially

Doraemon, in which a pile of cement pipes is a place for Nobita Nobi to play with his friends and a shelter from bullies.

Inspired by the scene, Long has always dreamed of actually living in a concrete tube.

In January, Long started his ambitious construction plan. He used planks to form the tube frame fast

ened by steel bars, and filled it with cement. After the tube was done, he set out on interior design and decoration.

Scientists discovered the possible presence of krill bree

ding grounds around Peter I Island in the Amundsen Sea area. The distribution of phytoplankton in the eastern Amundsen Sea a

rea was preliminarily proved through the first application of a trace metal sampling method developed by China.

At Changcheng station, scientists conducted ecological environment monitoring, glacier

monitoring and regular meteorological observation projects. Seismic stations there have bee

n upgraded, and a radar sea-level observation system has been constructed, the administration said.

Nearly 200 kilograms of samples of soil, water, animal and plant spec

imens and other materials, were collected at Changcheng station. Scientists also estab

lished the country’s first polar region sodium fluorescence laser Doppler radar room at Zhongshan sta

tion. During its trial run, about 51 hours of valid data and 2.5 GB of original data were collected.
